Sashiko // 1 Day // July 7

Join us for a meditative evening in the studio and develop an appreciation for Sashiko, a Japanese embroidery method. Sashiko dates to the 17th century when this method of handwork was originally used to lengthen the lives of garments for working families by stitching layers of new and worn out cloth together with long interlacing stitches in a geometric pattern.

As we understand more about the effects fast fashion has on our environment, an appreciation for Sashiko as one of many forms of visible mending and as a way to honor worn and loved items has grown. While Sashiko can be employed as a purely decorative form of embroidery (we will supply you with indigo colored fabric for this purpose), we also encourage you to bring in items (denim garments work particularly well) that you may wish to mend or decorate. Templates for various designs, thread and needles will be provided.
